What are the main differences between laminate, engineered and solid wood flooring?
Laminate and Vinyl flooring is usually cheaper than both engineered and solid flooring due to it not containing any real wood.

Laminate floors consist of high-density fibreboard usually around 10mm thick finished by ‘printing’ a picture of wood floor to give the appearance of real wood. Many laminates are water resistant and so are good choices for bathrooms, utilities and kitchens.

Engineered wood flooring consists of a ply base finished with a veneer of solid wood usually from 3-6mm. Most wood floors are engineered due to less problems with moisture and temperature and an easier production & installation process. Generally you can sand down a 4mm engineered wood floor 2-3 times and most of our products come with a 15-20 year warranty from the manufacturer.

Solid wood is cut from one piece of wood and does not consist of a ply base like engineered, its real solid wood throughout. Be careful with moisture as it acts like a sponge, expanding and contracting more than engineered wood floor. You can generally sand down a solid wood floor more times than an engineered wood floor depending on where the tongue and groove are placed on the planks.

Lacquered vs Oiled wood floor finish?
Lacquered is a modern day varnish which acts as a film over the surface of the timber. Best used for high-traffic areas such as restaurants and schools. Offered in a range of finishes lacquer can produce an ultra-shiny finish if desired.

Oiled floors are different in the way that the oil is absorbed into the wood as opposed to sitting on top of the timber like a lacquer. Best suited to residential, low traffic areas such as hallways, living rooms, bedrooms, etc. Often made from natural resources and results in a natural yet rich matt finish.

Using a tape measure, measure each side of the room. Try and split the room into rectangles as this makes it easier. For example an L shaped room could be split into two rectangular areas. As you are doing this draw a basic outline with a pen and paper. Multiple the width by length to get the area of the room. Remember to subtract areas like fireplaces.

How much extra flooring should I allow for “waste”?
For standard wood, laminate and vinyl plank flooring we recommend 10% wastage.
For Herringbone & Chevron we recommend 15% for wastage.

Always check how much wastage your fitter recommends!

Consider the shape of your rooms too, the more complex with loads of turns, kitchen islands, stairs etc the more wastage you will require.
